Biological Sciences is multidisciplinary subject which calls for conceptual inputs from diversified areas including statistical and mathematical sciences, computer science and engineering science, besides physical and chemical sciences. Scientific research is beyond supply and demand issue and it needs to be supported by adequate funding. The focus of research should be towards exposing the students to a broad range of techniques. Students in life sciences especially need to be trained beyond the classes. In the present scenario, quality life science programme offer opportunities in adopting newer technologies that were not there a few years ago. Therefore, programmes such as ones run by NRCBS need to be supported adequately so that it can constantly upgrade and embark on newer challenges in Biological Sciences. In this context, the major objectives of the centres are to promote collaborative research, to create access to advanced research facilities and to impart training to young researchers in frontier areas of the Biological Sciences. I am happy to report that NRCBS has taken several steps to promote research activity as evident from several winter/summer schools of training young researchers for a period of two weeks each. I must mention at this point that participants who benefit from this NRCBS are very happy and maintain the academic link in initiating new collaborative projects in future with the School of Biological Sciences. The Networking Resource Centre would of course retain its distinct character by preserving the strong teaching component and practical focus. Another uniqueness of MKU-NRCBS is visiting fellowship programme along the lines that are in practice to provide infrastructure facilities, guide doctoral students from other institutions for a period of 3 months with fellowship. It is proposed that several visiting fellows have been benefitted due to the NRCBS Programme. We do hope that we will be able to garner some support from UGC to continue this initiative in the next plan period also. I would like to congratulate each and every one of the participants of the NRCBS winter/summer schools & 'On site' programmes. I wish to say that the NRCBS team has, as usual, been busy and it has been a very demanding tenure (2008 - 2011). I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the faculty members of School of Biological Sciences for their whole hearted participation in the activities of NRCBS. On behalf of MKU-NRCBS I wish to place on record my sincere thanks to UGC and MHRD Empowered Committee with the following quote "Networking Resource Centre in Biological Sciences would continuously strive to emerge as an active Resource Center for Capacity Building in Biological Sciences and as the Nodal Centre for Knowledge Resource Networks for Research and Collaboration among scientific community in the country"
